Mission: Israelites
They are neither Jewish nor have they come from the Middle East. The Israelite Mission, an evangelical sect originating from the Peruvian highlands, seeks refuge in remote communities of the Amazon rainforest, works the land, and prepares the provisions that will save the world from divine punishment: the sins of the world have caused global warming, which will bring about a devastating famine. A religion that may seem delirious at first glance; a social response to the deep inequality in the distribution of land and wealth in Peru.
Since the 1990s, tens of thousands of members of this sect have migrated to the jungle from other regions of Peru, accumulating significant economic and political power. Their model of agricultural exploitation is incompatible with the rainforest and has caused widespread deforestation.
